<b>EMOTIONS ARE POWERFUL: HAPPY PEOPLE TEND TO LIVE LONGER<b>

be happy!

Subjective Well-Being (SWB) is how researchers define the individual’s current evaluation of happiness. Such an evaluation is often expressed in affective terms; when asked about subjective well-being, participants will often say, “I feel good”, “I feel happy”.

A  high Subjective Well-Being (SWB) seems to have a direct effect on the health and longevity, making it even increased by 14 percent!!

This is according to Professor Ed Diener, Department of Psychology University of Illinois, who has just published in the Journal of Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being the most comprehensive review so far of the evidence linking happiness to health outcomes.

Taking into account 160 studies, this review has found "clear and compelling evidence" that -- all else being equal -- happy people tend to live longer and experience better health than their unhappy peers.

"We reviewed eight different types of studies," Diener (nicknamed Dr. Happiness) said. "And the general conclusion from each type of study is that your subjective well-being -- that is, feeling positive about your life, not stressed out, not depressed -- contributes to both longevity and better health among healthy populations."

"I was almost shocked and certainly surprised to see the consistency of the data," Diener said. "All of these different kinds of studies point to the same conclusion: that health and then longevity in turn are influenced by our mood states."

Being Happy Makes you Live Longer and Look Better

So being well and happy is good for your health and prolongs your life. In general, experiencing more positive emotions is a good way of improving SWB. Positive emotions are deep felt emotions like love, joy, gratitude, interest, and hope. While negative emotions close our minds down, positive emotions open them up.

Emotions have also a powerful impact on our appearance. A range of emotions—and the ability to express them—are what make you human and beautiful.

It's true. When you're happy, you tend to feel positive, radiant and joyful.

Tatchme® boosts Positive Emotions with Aromatherapy

<b>EMOTIONS: WHATEVER DOESN’T KILL US CAN MAKE US STRONGER<b>

Most people have heard the quote by Fredrich Nietzsche "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." Now there is research to support that assertion.

A study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that after you face a hardship - like a job loss or the death of a loved one - you're better able to handle tough times in the future. Also, the researchers found that no exposure to negative events may also produce unhappiness.

So remember this whenever a crisis hits: just knowing you'll a come through it better able to roll with the punches can make it easier to cope with.

 emotions

The Study

Seery, PhD, assistant professor of psychology at the University at Buffalo and lead author of the study, says previous research indicates that exposure to adverse life events typically predicts negative effects on mental health and well-being, such that more adversity predicts worse outcomes.

But in this study of a national survey panel of 2,398 subjects assessed repeatedly from 2001 to 2004, Seery and co-researchers found those exposed to some adverse events reported better mental health and well-being outcomes than people with a high history of adversity or those with no history of adversity.

"We tested for quadratic relationships between lifetime adversity and a variety of longitudinal measures of mental health and well-being, including global distress, functional impairment, post-traumatic stress symptoms and life satisfaction," Seery says.

"Our findings revealed," he says, "that a history of some lifetime adversity -- relative to both no adversity or high adversity -- predicted lower global distress, lower functional impairment, lower PTS symptoms and higher life satisfaction."

The team also found that, across these same longitudinal outcome measures, people with a history of some lifetime adversity appeared less negatively affected by recent adverse events than other individuals.

The Important Link Between Emotions and Beauty

Emotions have a powerful impact on our appearance. A range of emotions—and the ability to express them—are what make you human and beautiful. It's true. When you're happy, you tend to feel positive, radiant and joyful.

Thing is, scientific findings show negative emotions can ultimately take a toll on your appearance if you don’t deal with them in a healthy way. So, everyone of us needs to learn to vent, to cope and to repair the damage. Stress can also make you more prone to wrinkles.

The solution? Go laugh your ass off. It instantly neutralizes stress hormones and breaks the stress trance…

<b>PREGNANCY SKIN CARE TIPS: GET THE GLOW!<b>

Skin Care Ingredients to Avoid

pregnancy beauty

Everything you eat, apply, or come into contact with may affect not only you but also your baby. Because some topical ingredients get absorbed into the bloodstream, there are some it is better to avoid. While most commonly used products are completely safe, there are a handful of ingredients considered potentially harmful to a growing baby.

Here the list of skin care ingredients to avoid while pregnant:

1.       Retinoids (Vitamin A)

These powerful substances - found in some anti-aging moisturizers - are lauded for helping reduce wrinkles and improve skin tone.
But retinoids are one of the skin-care ingredients that experts recommend that expectant moms stay away from. Some studies have shown that high doses of vitamin A during pregnancy can be harmful to an unborn child and can cause birth defects.

2.       Salicylic acid

This mild acid is used to treat certain skin disorders, including acne, and you can find it in a number of skin products, such as cleansers and toners. It can penetrate facial oils to get deep into pores and clean out dead skin cells. Salicylic acid is in the aspirin family, so it can also help reduce inflammation or redness.
But salicylic acid is another no-no for pregnant women. High doses of the acid in its oral form have been shown in studies to cause birth defects and various pregnancy complications.

3.       Soy

Some moms-to-be seek out natural ingredients such as soy in their skin-care products, thinking that they're free from harmful effects. But that's not necessarily the case.
While soy-based lotions and facial products are generally safe to use, soy can make the 'mask of pregnancy' (dark splotches on facial skin) worse, as can oil of bergamot, which is in many organic products. Best to avoid during pregnancy.

Note: hair removers, sunscreens and makeup cosmetics are safe to use.

Tips to Avoid Stretch marks

According to the studies, between 75 and 90 percent of women develop stretch marks during the sixth and seventh months of pregnancy. Stretch marks are caused by the stretching of the underlying layers of skin during pregnancy and typically show up as pink or purplish streaks on the abdomen and -- in some cases -- the breasts and the thighs.

1.       Massage your skin

Massaging your skin everyday with moisturiser or a massage glove can help to improve circulation, which encourages new tissue to grow.

2.       Keep your diet healhty

It is also important to eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins, especially vitamin E, vitamin C, zinc and silica that help to keep skin the healthy. Drinking lots of water will help with many aspects of pregnancy, including keeping your skin hydrated.

3.       Apply a rich moisturizing cream

Start early, and pick very rich creams. Don’t be drawn in by false promises – there’s no proof these creams can actually prevent stretch marks, but there’s some evidence that frequent use from early on can help reduce the effects by keeping the skin supple, and the action of rubbing in the cream can encourage better circulation.

4.       Don’t eat for two!

Pregnant women need to take in extra calories to nourish baby (about 500 extra calories per day), but make sure these calories are from nutritious foods, not fatty ones, so that you put on weight gradually and are able to shed pounds easily once you’ve finished breastfeeding

Pregnancy Skin Care Routine

demi moore

Pregnancy skin care for pregnant women is really essential; skin care and pregnancy go hand-in-hand. In order to maintain a pregnancy skin care routine, mums-to-be will need to focus on the basics of skin care. Follow these 3 easy pregnancy skin care tips.

1.       Cleansing: no soap

Soap removes natural oils from the skin, so try using a moisturizing body wash instead. This will maintain the essential oils in pregnant skin and promote a healthy glow.

2.       Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

The turnover of skin cells is accelerated during pregnancy, so make sure you nourish and moisturize more than normal to keep skin looking healthy.

3.       Sun Protection

Skin pigmentation can change during pregnancy and skin may tan/burn much more easily. The most important addition you should make to your skin-care routine during pregnancy (and beyond) is a moisturizer with at least SPF 15, and with broad spectrum protection.

The GOLDEN ROLE: Rest & Relax

One of the most important things you can do during pregnancy is to get plenty of rest, and to find time to relax.

A pregnant woman needs more sleep than she does when she's not pregnant. In most cases, 8 to 10 hours of sleep a night will help you feel better.

This really is beauty sleep for you and your baby!

<b>BEAUTY SLEEP: AN ESSENTIAL ANTI-AGING SECRET<b>

Beauty sleep is not a myth and sleep does lessen the severity of wrinkles in the face and neck, at least temporarily. For this reason, dermatologists often suggest using your most performant skin creams before bed... Time to check out RELAX Tatchme® Powerful Anti-Wrinkles Night Cream.

To avoid puffy, bloodshot eyes, dark under-eye circles and a pale washed-out complexion -- and for peak alertness and energy -- experts say you need: 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night.

Early in the nighttime sleep beauty sleepcycle, people typically have a surge in growth hormone - and for growth hormone read youth hormone. This period of deep sleep, stages 3 and 4 sleep, contributes to what people call "beauty sleep" as secretion of growth hormone helps repair and rebuild body tissues like muscle and bone.

Many of the body’s cells also show increased production and reduced breakdown of proteins during deep sleep. Since proteins are the building blocks needed for cell growth and for repair of damage from factors like stress and ultraviolet rays, deep sleep may truly be "beauty sleep."

There is some evidence that skin cells regenerate faster at night than during the day. Cell division happens throughout the day, but peaks around 2 am. This is literally renewal and rejuvenation during sleep. The peak in cell division happens even if you stay awake at night, while the surge in growth hormone doesn't.

  • From 8pm to 11pm is the time for hydration and stimulation,
  • while 11pm to 3am is the time for nutrition and regeneration,
  • and 3am to 5am is the time for resting.

Remember: an hour before midnight is worth three afterwards.

Unlike common belief, sleep cannot be 'carried over' to the next day. Lack of sleep adversely impacts your body fat percentage and raises your risk of all sorts of diseases and illnesses like strokes and diabetes.

Here are some tips to help you get the sleep you need:

sleeping beautyDO

  • Exercise and get fresh air during the day.
  • Take a deep relaxing bath with your favorite scented bath essence and some candles.
  • Stay calm before bed time – try to empty your mind of the details from your day.
  • Relax while taking off make-up and preparing for bed. Enjoy the time you’re spending just on you.

DON’T

  • Avoid caffeine, nicotine or other stimulants within six hours of bedtime.
  • No sweets before bed time. High blood sugar interferes with growth hormone production which is essential to look younger for longer.
  • Minimize light, noise and temperature extremes; your bedroom should be comfortably cool.
  • Don't read, watch television or work in bed. Use the bed only to sleep.
  • Avoid large meals just before bedtime.

There are few things more frustrating than not being able to get to sleep.

For those who have difficulty sleeping, before you reach for your sleeping medications, you might want to try aromatherapy. This method is more natural and also serves to enhance the already countless benefits of sleep by aiding your bloodstream as it works through the night.

How Does Aromatherapy work?

  • Essential oils stimulate our sense of smell.
  • Smells enter through our nose and travel to the part of our brain that controls our moods, emotions and memory.
  • Things we smell have a significant impact on how we feel.

Chamomile, Roman (Chamaemelum nobile)

Bergamot (Citrus aurantium)

How to Use Scents for Sleep Problems

MASSAGE
One approach is to massage your neck, shoulders, and any other areas with a relaxing essential oil blend.
How to mix essential oils for a massage: Place up to 10 drops of your scents in a glass container, along with 10ml of carrier oil (like jojoba oil, for example). Place the lid on the container and shake the contents to mix, and then apply to the skin via massage.

BATH
Unwind with an essential-oil-enhanced bath before bedtime.
How to add essential oils to your bath: Mix up to 10 drops of your essential oils to your bath water once the water has finished running.

ATHMOSPHERE
You could also shake three or four drops of a sleep-promoting essential oil onto your pillow just before you're going to sleep, or blend 2 or 3 essential oils in the burner bowl and allow the mixture to diffuse in the air.

DRINKING TISANES

Chamomile, lavender and bergamot are three unique flowers  valued for their calming and relaxing effects on the human body and mind. You can brew tisanes with those flowers/plants. Drinking tisanes allows you to take a break and gives you few moments of simple, sensory delight.

NOTE: Pregnant women and those with allergies to similar plants—asters, daisies, chrysanthemums, or ragweed—should not ingest chamomille or use it topically.

<b>NATURAL ANTI-AGING SKIN CARE: THE AROMATHERAPY FACTOR <b>

essential oilsAromatherapy is the practice of using the natural essential oils extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant to enhance psychological and physical well-being.

Aromatherapy was an accidental discovery. French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé accidentally set his arm on fire in his laboratory in 1920s. The nearest cold liquid he could locate was lavender oil, probably because it was a perfume laboratory. He noticed that the burn healed quickly and left no scarring. From that point on he researched essential oils and how they heal.

Aromatherapy means “treatment using scents.” The healing art of aromatherapy uses essential oils to relieve stress, anxiety, and fatigue to promote relaxation and wellbeing.

Stress causes premature aging

Extreme or prolonged emotional stress, sadness, grief, anxiety (and even tension caused by happy events) can have dramatic effects on the body. These conditions cause oxidative stress, which means the production of free radicals in our body. These physical effects manifest in many different ways, and may include sleep problems, depressed immune function, chronic headaches, and quick aging of the skin.

Unfortunately, our bodies are unable to counteract all the daily free radical damage to our cellular function. Many herbs used in Ayurvedic medicine have antioxidant effects, which means that they may help neutralize free radicals.

Positive emotions help build resistance to stress

If we take a more holistic approach to health, maintaining balance in the body and the mind is key to live longer and happier. In other words, we could say that positive emotions are powerful free radical scavengers...

Indeed, there is an undeniable connection between emotional and physical health. For instance, it is said that for every 10 minuets of good laughter (not just a smile) you can achieve an average of 2 hours of deep sleep a night.

hippocatres

Whatever occurs in the mind affects the body and vice versa.  The body and the mind cannot be considered independently. When the two are out of sync, then both emotional and physical stress can erupt.” Hippocrates

Aromatherapy directly impacts on emotions

Essential oils can directly impact emotional states through the olfactory system, which makes it a uniquely holistic healing modality. Aromas are sensed and analyzed in the reticular system of the brain stem. In this body system, emotions, memories, and attention are connected.

Certain aromas can stimulate the hypothalamus, a part of the brain. The hypothalamus then produces hormones, which are potent compounds that influence emotions and behavior.

Herein lies the power of aromatherapy -- it can not only influence the physical imbalances of the body, but also affect emotions and memory.

Aromatherapy: methods of application

MASSAGE – It is one of the oldest and best methods to use aromatherapy. It helps the essential oils to get absorbed readily in to the blood stream.

BATH – This method could be used for having a wonderful and a relaxing experience. Add few drops of essential oils to the bath water and soak in.

INHALATION – It is one of the best techniques of application. It affects the nervous system through the olfactory system. It could be done by adding few drops of essential oils to the hot water and inhaling the vapor. Inhalers are also available in the market for this purpose.

<b>THE BEAUTY PRESCRIPTION, book<b>

This new book is the ultimate mind-body guide offering a mix of practical inner and outer beauty advice.

Debra Luftamn Eva Ritva MD

Dermatologist Dr Debra Luftman and psychiatrist Dr. Eva Ritvo have been best friends and medical practitioners for more than 25 years.

During this time, they've seen hundreds of women with every kind of beauty concern - from fat thighs and acne to poor body image and low self-esteem.

beauty prescription book

"The women I saw were looking for solutions through external, physical treatments - creams, laser surgery or liposuction". Dr Eva's clients in South Beach, Florida, were seeking psychological advice. But, essentially, they all felt the same - that they weren't good enough.

"We realised then that between us we had the knowhow to come up with the perfect beauty prescription to help women feel and look more beautiful, from the inside and out."

"But the key here is how you feel. True beauty isn't about being physically perfect: it's about maximising your beauty potential. When you do this, people will subconsciously want to treat you better."

One of the main messages in the Beauty Prescription is that your physical attributes are only part of what makes you attractive.

Research shows that others see you as 20 per cent more attractive than you think you are. That's because, when you look in the mirror, you're simply judging yourself on looks. All you can see is your reflection - but none of the personality.

THE BEAUTY-BRAIN LOOP

At the core of Dr Debra and Dr Eva's advice is the Beauty-Brain Loop.  http://www.beautyandthebrain.com/

When you look better, you feel better. When you feel better, you look better. That's the Beauty- Brain Loop in a nutshell. In this holistic system, anything that changes one stage of the Loop activates changes in the other stages.

<b> BIOLOGY TELLS US THAT MEN AND WOMEN REALLY THINK DIFFERENTLY</b>

Men may be from Mars and women may be from Venus, and since the American psychotherapist John Gray wrote his famous book, in 1992, on the idea, it has been a commonplace to think of men and women as being from different planets in terms of their emotional responses.

biology men women emotions Scientists have come to accept that a few fundamental differences between men and women are biological. Findings suggest that human evolution has created two different types of brains designed for equally intelligent behavior. Scientists find it very interesting that while men and women use two very different activity centers and neurological pathways, men and women perform equally well on broad measures of cognitive ability, such as intelligence tests.

It turns out that men's and women's brains, for example, are not only different, but the way we use them differs too. Women have larger connections and more frequent interaction between their brain's left and right hemispheres. This accounts for women's ability to have better verbal skills and intuition. Men, on the other hand, have greater brain hemisphere separation, which explains their skills for abstract reasoning and visual-spatial intelligence.

Here 10 big differences:

1. Human relationships. Women tend to communicate more effectively than men, and to utilize non-verbal cues such as tone, emotion, and empathy whereas men tend to be more task-oriented, less talkative, and more isolated. Men have a more difficult time understanding emotions that are not explicitly verbalized.

2. Reaction to stress. Men tend to have a "fight or flight" response to stress situations while women seem to approach these situations with a "tend and befriend" strategy. The reason for these different reactions to stress is rooted in hormones. Resulting in calming and nurturing feelings, the hormone oxytocin is released during stress in everyone. However, men produce high levels of estrogen which tends to reduce the effects of oxytocin.

3. Language. Two sections of the brain responsible for language were found to be larger in women than in men, indicating one reason that women typically excel in language-based subjects and in language-associated thinking.

4. Emotions. Women typically have a larger deep limbic system than men, which allows them to be more in touch with their feelings and better able to express them, which promotes bonding with others. Because of this ability to connect, more women serve as caregivers for children.

5. Pain. Men and women perceive pain differently. In studies, women require more morphine than men to reach the same level of pain reduction. Women are also more likely to vocalize their pain and to seek treatment for their pain than are men.

6. Left brain vs. both hemispheres. Men tend to process better in the left hemisphere of the brain while women tend to process equally well between the two hemispheres. This difference explains why men are generally stronger with left-brain activities and approach problem-solving from a task-oriented perspective while women typically solve problems more creatively and are more aware of feelings while communicating.

7. Mathematical abilities. An area of the brain called the inferior-parietal lobule (IPL) is typically significantly larger in men. This section of the brain is thought to control mental mathematical ability. Interestingly, this is the same area of Einstein’s brain that was discovered to be abnormally large.

8. Brain size. Typically, men’s brains are 11-12% bigger than women’s brains. This size difference has absolutely nothing to do with intelligence, but is explained by the difference in physical size between men and women. Men need more neurons to control their greater muscle mass and larger body size, thus generally have a larger brain.

9. Susceptibility to disorders. Men are more apt to have dyslexia or other language problems. Women, on the other hand, are more susceptible to mood disorders such as depression and anxiety.

10. Spatial ability. Men typically have stronger spatial abilities, or being able to mentally represent a shape and its dynamics, whereas women typically struggle in this area. Men tend to retain a firm sense of direction.

All the above gets even more confusing, if we take into account that 15 to 20% of men happen to have a female type of brains, and about 10% of women have a male type of brains, which means that some percentage of men and women, no matter how small it seems, are partially programmed to the behavior and way of thinking of the opposite gender.

After all, males and females differ only by one Y chromosome, but this makes a real impact upon the way we think and react to so many things.

Ask a man for directions and he'll say 'go straight, and then turn left in 25 meters'. A woman will say, 'Turn right at the shoe store and left at the bakery'.
